Walk to School Day, Wed 10/3

Good Morning,
Did you know that Walk to School Day is being celebrated around the country next Wednesday?
This is an opportunity to highlight the importance of not using the car to bring children to school and getting some exercise to help fight the nation's obesity crisis.  It is also an opportunity to highlight why kids don't walk to school these days.  Some of the reasons might be:
- There aren't enough sidewalks between your house and the school
- There is a major highway between you and the school that makes walking or biking precarious
- You are on your way to work when you drop-off your kids and you can't walk to work from the school
- You have on your work clothes and don't want to get sweaty from walking before going to work
- You live more than a mile from an elementary school, more than 1.5 miles from a middle school, and more than 2 miles from a high school, and your child
has school bus transportation (see http://www.montgomeryschoolsmd.org/parents/basics/transportation/)
Some of these issues will require time and changes in physical infrastructure to overcome, others require a change in habit.  Did you know that most sustainable practices do require a change in behavior?  For instance, remembering to not throw paper that can be recycled into the trash and create a new receptacle or place to store recyclable paper.  Habits can be hard to break but change is essential to creating a more sustainable world.

And please write to the GreenWheaton community and let us know how you were able to overcome some of the challenges of breaking old habits to form more sustainable ones.  Topics might include getting your kids to bike or walk to school or recycling more household stuff that you used to put in the trash.

Have a great weekend!
